The list reflects the combined opinions of approximately 400,000 reviews submitted by verified toptable diners for nearly 4,000 restaurants across the UK. The top 25 shows French cuisine as the hot choice for romance ahead of Valentine’s Day this year, accounting for almost half of the list, while Italian and British are also proving popular romantic cuisines. Despite the growing popularity of Asian food amongst UK diners, there was no room for Chinese, Indian or Thai cuisine in the top 25, with the list consisting entirely of European restaurants.

“Romance can mean very different things to different people but a gorgeous meal, perfect service and warm atmosphere make for an undeniably romantic combination. Each of these restaurants offers a different romantic experience, but all are truly best of class,” said Lucy Taylor, head of restaurant relations at toptable.

Fred Sirieix, General Manager of Galvin at Windows, which was included on the list commented, “We are obviously delighted to be recognised as one of the most romantic restaurants. It is especially humbling knowing the distinction is based on diner reviews. We strive to create singular experiences for all our guests and when it comes to romance this quality is especially important.”

The top 25 romantic restaurants in the UK are generated from approximately 400,000 reviews collected from verified toptable diners between January 2012 and January 2013. All restaurants with a minimum “overall” score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. 4. Still looking for that perfect restaurant for Valentine’s Day?

toptable reveals the UK’s top food bloggers’ tips for romantic restaurants

Finding the ideal restaurant for a romantic date can often be a daunting task.  toptable invited some of the UK’s leading food bloggers to share their experience and thoughts on the restaurants they think are the most romantic and why.

The resulting list is varied and features a number of hidden gems amongst some of the UK’s best known restaurants.  Greedy Diva chose The Waterside Inn, saying, “It’s elegant and intimate, the food is wonderful and the service is perfect.”  The CattyLife selected The Ledbury in Notting Hill, commenting, “With two Michelin stars and a lot of class, my favourite restaurant balances pristine service with delectable food and trust me, you’ll leave with a heart brimming with content in more ways than one!”

Andrew Edmunds in Soho was the choice of Eat Like a Girl who said, “Peering through the window into the soft candlelight, I couldn’t resist that first meal and it has become a firm favourite.”   PalAtTable agreed, “I considered the grand (Geales) and the wow-factor (Hakkasan) but kept going back to a much-loved and trustworthy restaurant to spark some romance.”

Gaelic culinary charm trumped with Bitten and Written praising L’Absinthe in Primrose Hill, commenting that “… Jean-Christophe Slowik has created a true neighbourhood gem of a French bistro.”  And Tamarind and Thyme chose Le Vacherin, Malcolm John’s classically French bistro in Chiswick.

Restaurants serving sharing plates enticed several bloggers.  Food Stories opted for Tierra Brindisa in Soho, London, “…as it’s tapas you share the plates – sizzling padron peppers; goat’s cheese drizzled seductively with orange blossom honey; plates of stunning, nutty jamon Iberico with its luxurious melting fat, washed down with indecent amounts of Pedro Ximenez. Swoon.”  And Rocket and Squash said, “Restaurants serving small, sharing plates are ideal date territory and Fino is a good option.”

For a romantic meal with a difference, Gourmet Chick chose Dans le Noir in Clerkenwell where you eat entirely in the dark.  “While you may not be able to look into your beloved’s eyes, the darkness heightens every other sense so you can focus on the taste, texture and scent of your meal”, she commented.  And Bruce Palling said that dining at Brunswick House in Vauxhall was “magical and unforgettable “.

“I can’t think of many who won’t be impressed by the sumptuous decor, Michelin-starred food and breathtaking vistas at Galvin at Windows”, said Cheese and Biscuits.

Finally, that most romantic of foods, oysters, was not ignored by Intoxicating Prose who said “…nothing is more sensuous as a broad platter loaded with tangibly fresh crustaceans… for the ideal Valentine’s evening, perch high at the long, snaking counter of Wright Bros Oyster & Porter House, Borough Market.”

“This is a great list that provides our customers with great tips for romantic dining”, said Lucy Taylor, Head of Restaurant Relations.  “Whether you are looking for a formal or more casual restaurant or just something a little bit out of the ordinary – there are choices to cover all bases.”
