Brits are set for a very modern Valentine’s Day with women expecting to share the cost of dining out on Friday 14th February

– Research by toptable finds that only 28% of women surveyed are expecting their partners to foot the bill for dinner
– Nearly two thirds of women would rather  be taken out for a meal than receive flowers
– 64% of respondents would choose conversation over looks for a Valentine’s Day date
– Holly Willoughby beat Kelly Brook to be voted the perfect female celebrity dinner date
– The biggest Valentine’s table manner faux pas is getting too drunk

Gone are the days when guys would have to save up their pennies throughout January to entertain their dream date on Valentine’s Day – new research by toptable, the leading consumer destination site for restaurant bookings in the UK, finds that women are planning to either split the bill or treat their other halves to a dinner out this year. In a survey of 2,000 adults, only 28% of women are expecting their partners to pay the bill.

Anyone hoping to impress on 14th February should take note: nearly two thirds of women would opt for a meal over a bouquet of flowers, 64% of both men and women would go for conversation over looks when choosing a dinner date, and the biggest table manner faux pas are getting too drunk (21%) and using social media at the table (18%). Hopeful romantics should also make sure the date is in their diary, as almost 20% of men surveyed admitted to forgetting about Valentine’s Day when in a relationship.

“Many couples will be preparing for a romantic meal out this Valentine’s weekend and restaurants across the UK are offering special menus and experiences to mark the occasion.” said Lucy Taylor, head of restaurant relations for toptable.

TV presenter Holly Willoughby narrowly beat the likes of Kelly Brook, Megan Fox and Jennifer Lawrence to be voted the ideal female celebrity dinner date by 22% of men surveyed.  David Beckham earned the title of ideal male celebrity dinner date from women surveyed at 18%, seeing off competition from Bradley Cooper (14%), Ryan Gosling (13%) and Tom Hardy (8%).

And whilst you can’t hurry love, you can hurry a booking. The toptable app has you sorted. To make it even easier to decide where to take that special someone, toptable has rounded up restaurants offering specials for the day and weekend.

toptable has apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and a mobile optimised site that enable diners to search for available tables nearby using geo-location or in a specified neighbourhood, make an instantly confirmed booking and discover new restaurants through a convenient and easy to navigate design.  Diners may also view mobile optimised menus, browse popular dish photos from Foodspotting and read reviews from other verified toptable diners.

The toptable Valentine’s survey of 2,000 adults was carried out by OnePoll between 3rd February and 5th February 2014.
