Gone are the days when guys would have to save up their pennies throughout January to entertain their dream date on Valentine’s Day – new research by toptable, the leading consumer destination site for restaurant bookings in the UK, finds that women are planning to either split the bill or treat their other halves to a dinner out this year. In a survey of 2,000 adults, only 28% of women are expecting their partners to pay the bill.

Anyone hoping to impress on 14th February should take note: nearly two thirds of women would opt for a meal over a bouquet of flowers, 64% of both men and women would go for conversation over looks when choosing a dinner date, and the biggest table manner faux pas are getting too drunk (21%) and using social media at the table (18%). Hopeful romantics should also make sure the date is in their diary, as almost 20% of men surveyed admitted to forgetting about Valentine’s Day when in a relationship.

“Many couples will be preparing for a romantic meal out this Valentine’s weekend and restaurants across the UK are offering special menus and experiences to mark the occasion.” said Lucy Taylor, head of restaurant relations for toptable.

TV presenter Holly Willoughby narrowly beat the likes of Kelly Brook, Megan Fox and Jennifer Lawrence to be voted the ideal female celebrity dinner date by 22% of men surveyed.  David Beckham earned the title of ideal male celebrity dinner date from women surveyed at 18%, seeing off competition from Bradley Cooper (14%), Ryan Gosling (13%) and Tom Hardy (8%).
